Short and sweet, takes place a year after 'Catching Cinders'

Short retelling of the old French tale 'Donkeyskin', and Robin McKinley's version 'Deerskin'.

Lia is on the run from a traumatic experience involving her step-father, and hides away in the wilderness for two years before arriving in Valeria. In Valeria she works in the menagerie taking care of the animals, while attending the university, and avoiding people as much as possible.

She meets a quiet young man, and they become friends over time, mostly by studying together quietly away from the rest of the students. Lia realizes her trust in him has turned into love, but there is still an obstacle she must face before following where her heart wishes to go.

There is no violence, only the stated memory of the trauma. This story is suitable for anyone 13 and older, due to the mention of the step-fathet's plans for Lia.
