Really fun, fast paced story that subverts what we’re used to with fairytales.

I ended up really enjoying this. I had tried reading this once before a couple months ago, but found it a bit difficult to get into. This time around I still had some of the same issues with the beginning, such as the writing style feeling every heavy and draining until about half way through. That being said the entire time that I was reading this I was enjoying it, even with my issues. Agatha had to be by far my favorite character, I really liked seeing her transformation. Sophie bugged me, from page 1 I could see that she really was destined to be in the School for Evil. I wasn't a fan of Tedros, maybe if we had his POV a bit more often I would have liked him better but he to me seemed like a waste of space, Hort was a much better character overall.
All in all I enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading the remaining books in the series sometime soon.

2017 edit: I rated it down to three stars bc looking back I didn't like it that much.

------------------------------------------------------------------
I know my reviews have been so short lately but I honestly just want to read because I'm always 3-4 books behind schedule (eos' fault and we didn't even have chaol) and I need to keep reading!!!!!

I hated how stupid the girls were in the beginning. Agatha was just Sophie's pet. Neither of them realized the prophecy, if any, referred to them as Good Agatha and Evil Sophie. Sophie was manipulative and awful to Nevers and Evers alike, and was just a whining kid through all the book.

But when both of them finally embraced their true selfs, BOY OH BOY

Also can we talk about the magic system??? Because I love it. And the fairy tales and the Storian and the... uh... monsters???? Magical creatures??? Fantastic beasts????? (wink wink). They were amazing too. The companion animals (/cupid/demons??) they got should've been explored and mentioned more, and the BLUE FOREST HUNGER GAMES WHAT WAS THAT WHY WAS THAT NECESSARY

Am I giving it four stars because of the shipping? Yes
Do I feel bad about it? No

I thought that this story was a charming story with a lot of comedic aspects to it. I found Agatha delightful and brave. I loved that unlike the other Ever girls she didn't need a prince to save her. I really liked the Never students. I found them to be the best part of the story, especially Hort. I found Sophie and the ever kids (excluding Agatha) to be completely dim-witted and repulsive. This is well done, but probably a bit more mature than the age group it's geared for. I will say that I probably won't read the other two books in the series. I felt that this had a really good ending to the story, and it seems complete to me. I'm sure that the other two books are good as well, but not everything needs to be a series.

i definitely did not enjoy the school for good and evil as much as i thought i would. i thought i would rate it about 4-5✰ because i absolutely adore fairytale retellings, but unfortunately, that was not the case with this book.

i could not stand sophie for about 90% of the time. i get she’s not supposed to be the most likable character but she made me want to skip almost every chapter she was in. on the other hand, i enjoyed reading about agatha. she’s so sarasctic and entertaining.

the plot and mystery was interesting enough to keep me hooked but it was nothing phenomenal. the romance was okay. i definitely feel like as the series goes on, it’ll get stronger and you’ll root for the relationship more.

i just want to mention that i did watch the school for good and evil movie (which i actually really enjoyed; definitely more than the book) so i may be unintentionally comparing the two.

despite all of this, i actually had a nice time. this is a middle-grade and i definitely think kids of that age-range would enjoy it more than i did! i do believe the series will get better as it goes on, so i will be reading the sequel to the school for good and evil. hopefully i’ll enjoy it more!! ⋆。°✩
