Stand alone it is very good. But after reading The Headmistress, this is basically the same book. That's why it felt slow to me since I read all the major points before. I liked hearing Magdalene's story but would have liked to hear a continuation of her and Sam's story, not the same plot.

I feel like I’m missing out on something here. Everyone else is obviously digging the heck out of this book (I’ve seen at least three reviews alone calling it a masterpiece) and I really just did not get it.

The begging was very strong but I had a hard time staying interested. It felt very repetitive and emotionally draining and I don’t think there was enough difference in Magdalena’s perspective to make me stay interested in revisiting the plot from the first book.

But I’m obviously an outlier — so many people love this book so much.
