Okay, somebody recommended that I read an Adriana Trigiani, so I decide to read Big Stone Gap, the first book in what is now a four book series. I'll be honest, I didn't have high hopes for this book. I thought I would read it and be like, "oh, that was nice, but I don't care about it enough to read any more of the series". And, as I started it, I thought the portrayal of Southerners felt a little stereotypical. But then I sort of fell into the book and I really started to enjoy the characters. I have a soft spot now for Ave Maria Mulligan and Jack MacChesney. Is this amazing literature? No. Does it feel like coming home to your favorite tv show? Yes, so I will read more of these books.
Adriana Trigiani is a fantastic story-teller, with great stories to tell. I love her writing style and her characters -- however, this is the second book I've read of hers, and it, also fell down in the end. There was potential, but the story seemed to take a strange, hard-to-believe twist toward the end. I am still interested in continuing the books in this series - but apprehensively.
I liked it at first. But then it just started to drag because the main character kept giving me a million facts about every single thing. I just want the story to progress already. DNF
Kinda slow going... but pretty funny and quirky characters!
