I am giving this book 2 stars, and the spice level is maybe 1 chili pepper; it's not even spicy. I'm a little disappointed in this book because I love travel romance, and Scotland is on my bucket list. So, I was hoping this book would spark interest in places to go in Scotland, but it didn’t. I think the only reason I finished this book is because of how far I got reading it while on a cruise. The problem that I had, which I originally thought was because I was relaxed on the cruise, was that every time I picked this book up, I fell asleep. I’d be reading it then zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…haha that doesn’t usually happen to me unless I'm exhausted. So, to be reading out on the pool deck in the middle of the day and passing out. Something is up. I struggled so hard, and almost DNF’d this book. Here is what I liked about this book. I liked that it was set in Scotland. I like that it discussed Scottish legends like the Selkie. I like that it talked about Scottish celebrations, specifically Hogmanay (New Year). Now for the disappointment. There is one incredibly spicy scene, but the whole book is about Immediate attraction, stifling said attraction to become enemies and then eventually lovers. This book claims to have great banter, I didn't feel that way. Addie struggled with commitment and attachment because she felt like she was going to be hurt again based on something that happened with her family. She is also on a self-discovery journey in Scotland, trying to connect with her late mother; she is processing that grief. and the grief and resentment for her dad because she felt abandoned by him. This makes her really bad at communication. Whereas Logan is madly in love with her almost to the needy point, and all he wants is for her to open up. The bad communication trope is not one I do well with. They spend most of the story bickering, but it's not fun banter. There is no character growth until the last 10 pages. I mean, stop it at some point and have the characters develop and grow. That would make for a more engaging story. I would have liked to have read more of them figuring out and growing instead of a rushed epiphany moment. This wasn't for me, but if you like slow burn, descriptive writing, bad communication, and enemies to lovers, this may be the book for you.

I think 16 year old me would have loved this book so much more than 26 year old me. The two main characters are giving toxic at every turn and are just mad at everyone else la la living their life and felt like they could find any way to blame everyone else for things not working out or their poor communication styles

I was on a mission to read a great rom during February and this was my second attempt. It was much better than the first one I picked up, but it still fell a little short for me.
I loved all the characters in this book - the main two, yes, but even the supporting characters were each so endearing and well-described - and the setting. A romance in the Scottish highlands? Yes, please! My only complaint is that I felt like the book was a little longer than it needed to be. A lot of writing was spent on the main characters' inner dialogues and there was too much repetitive back-and-forth musings ("I want to open up to him, but I can't...I want to be with her, but I shouldn't...etc. etc.) for my taste. It felt a little redundant at times and I couldn't wait for things to wrap up already - but once they did, I loved the ending!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the advanced reader's copy of this book.
