Some good ideas, but also felt like a lot of filler to hit a desired page count.

A practical and well-rounded approach to learning
This is an exceptional book; however, it must also come with a very important pre-face. Your results will vary drastically.
Scott makes a point to go over this, however I don’t believe he gave this fact enough attention.
Everyone’s learning ability, aptitude and speed is very different, some people will find the Ultra learning approach to take them leaps and bounds and for others it will only move the clock hand by a few turns.
Everyone’s learning ability, aptitude and speed is very different, some people will find the Ultra learning approach to take them leaps and bounds and for others it will only move the clock hand by a few turns.
And that is perfectly fine.
Do not be discouraged and push forward in your learning as much as you can. And always keep things in perspective, you don’t always have to aim for the top 1% to take away important things. Whether it’s simply learning and acquiring a new skill that has always interested you or going from average to good or just above average or even getting just a little bit better can be a very satisfying reward in itself!
I ask that you always make sure to keep things in perspective and not to be discouraged.
Now, time to discuss the book.
An exploration into the tools of learning
Many of the things that Scott Young went over are things I had already discovered myself, however they were things I had discovered after many many years of trial and error. Years of looking into others’ approaches and working on and finding my own. And still I was amazed by how he managed to summarize what was a lifetime of learning, in just a few short hours.
Even more impressive is that he was able to find and go over new techniques or even take different approaches to the same techniques that I had already learned, squeezing the absolute most from just a few essential concepts. In that way, what Scott Young truly brings to the table is a succinctly summarized collection of techniques that can be practically applied in your life.
The Ultra learning approach is quite different from most traditional advice books, instead of making you a passive observer you are encouraged to take an active approach in your learning. To constantly engage with your material and to avoid making the mistake of chasing after perceived growth vs actual.
The core philosophy of the book is to create a personal plan for each topic, skill or subject you wish to learn about and to make concrete evaluations as to how far you have or have not gone.
It’s a very sensible approach that can be applied to even real life but more than that it turns learning from something nebulous into something clear and defined.
It is a fantastic book, and it has made me take on my own insane projects that without I may not have found the confidence to take on. It’s just the right length and even a partial listen will give you many things to come away with.
Whether or not you have time to go through the whole book I would say it is a must-read especially for those interested in self-study but even the student can take away much from it.
If you have the time I also recommend looking into Scott Young’s MIT Challenge, it is certainly an inspiration.
This is a book I am certain I will come back to from time to time over the coming years.

In summary,
Ultra learning is a work that breaks down a lifetime of learning into one short book.
