X-Men: Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont

I'm not sure I could have been an old-school comics fan: the dialogue is appalling, and there's lots of that much-parodied (but these days, rarely seen) thing where the characters explain what they're doing: "But by extending my claws made of adamantium--the strongest metal on earth--I can defeat you!" Also, I don't like the implication that Jean Grey/Phoenix's powers are in some way tied into her sexuality (because women who are interested in sex = evil!). And why is Storm always the first one defeated in a fight?

However, the panel where a pre-teen Kitty Pryde helps a hairy, naked Wolverine climb out of a giant golden bird cage was pretty sweet.

Though certainly a really cool story, the Claremont's dialogue is stilted to the point that it's often groan-inducing. There are some great moments of beautiful prose, but most of those feel out-of-place because it often describes the visuals.

X-MEN '97 INSPIRED READING #3

A timeless classic. New characters, old friends, and tragic deaths.

Just saw the movie.
Let’s just say the comic book was not a spoiler for the movie.
While similarly themed and containing some of the same characters, the movie is not just retconned, it’s wholly reimagined. It had to be to keep it to a reasonable budget.

Really wanted to catch up on this storyline as the Dark Phoenix movie was coming out.

It's filled with all the cheesiness and altruistic dialogue of heroic comics from the 80's.

This was just really painful to read. It was so clunky and cheesy; and I was bored out of my mind, especially during the second half. I don't need to be reminded of every little thing constantly. Or be told the story through the character's thoughts and dialogue. That's supposed to be the beauty of graphic novels; that the pictures can help tell the story. I don't feel like this utilized that at all.

This is a classic example of why I don't care for older comics. They don't have good art, the story is clunky, the dialogue is cheesy. Pretty much the exact opposite of why I read graphic novels in the first place.
