This is a review after reading it twice. I believe this is a useful book with advice that any martial artist can walk away from with some new perspectives or wisdom to apply to their own training. There are several moments where the author interacts with Bruce Lee, so if you're a fan of Bruce and his philosophy then this is probably something worth looking at.

My one pet peeve with this book is amount of reference to Aikido, I'm not particularly a fan of Aikido, but being an older book I don't hold that against it.sh31bz's review against another edition

So I ended up picking this up after asking my own Sifu for recommended reading. I will say that there’s a strange thing happening in my life right now where it’s all working together to build me up to whoever I’ll be in the future. The combination of strengthening my Christian faith in tandem with my growth in the physical and mental aspects of martial arts was reinforced by a book of lessons in quieting the mind and trusting the unconscious. Great read; something I will definitely read again for a refresher in the future. And so accessible! Easy to read and compelling straight through.

When I first ordered the book online I didn't expect it to be this thin. (But I guess every book that includes Zen in its tittle is not supposed to be too long. 'Cos it's not about words, right?) Confused by the high ratings here I thought it would be a deep and complex research of the matter - explaining techniques as well as giving global overview. Instead, it is just quickly passing by the subjects, not digging into them. And it gets pretty naive at times. The next American... I won't say bullshit.. It just reminds me of those clues giving books. Clues most of which I've already experienced, heard of, or thought by my instructor. No doubt though that what it's said in the book is truthful and it's what most martial artists go through.
After all it's a nice book to read.

This is a fantastic book for anyone in the Martial Arts. For a long time after I read it, I gave copies to everyone from my school who graduated to black belt.

A wonderful, insightful book. As a martial artist (albeit a beginner), Hyams has given me a lot of food for thought with Zen, and I am positive it will influence my life in and outside of the dojo. I anticipate returning to this again and again.

This book definitely changed who I was as a martial artist. It made me put everything into perspective.
