Okay, this book has me gushing. McConaghy has a knack for creating a gorgeous world of dichotomy - gentle but violent, beautiful but dark, quiet but complex. I love her themes of naturalism and conservation. I felt plunged into the same world of Migrations, yet I enjoyed this one more due to the suspense building of the story. This checked so many boxes for what I love in a book. I would recommend noting the trigger warnings for this one, as there are lie some intense themes.

I was really compelled by the themes in this book - the impacts of trauma, the damage humans have made to our environment, the need for community engagement in conservation efforts, the danger of misplaced fear, and the comparison and contrast between humans and wolves as predators. This book tackled important societal questions in a unique story.

However I also struggled with the flashbacks during the beginning of the book, predicted the ending, and wish that the characters took more accountability for their actions. Ultimately I think the story was a vessel for important messages, but the plot itself left a bit to be desired.

Not sure how to feel about this one! The first hour was quite slow and I thought I might DNF, but after that it got quite interesting. There are quite some subplots, and some questions left open for me. I was expecting a „The Overstory“ kind of book, which this wasn‘t for me. The main character was not exactly likeable for me.

have had this book for three years but never read it because I was convinced it wouldn’t be as perfectly spectacular as Migrations. Reading the majority of this book had me second guessing that, but then that twist came and ruined absolutely everything for me.
The world building, the characters, the setting, the wolves and the slow build up of tension in the town, between Inti and the farmers or some other characters, the emotional reveal I knew was waiting for me later in the book about Inti and her sister. We were gearing up for a promising five star if not solid four star title. But the reveal, after so much was lost, it wasn’t the type of emotional devastation I was expecting. I wasn’t devastated, I was furious. This completely ruined the story for me, everything just suddenly fell apart and felt like it didn’t matter at all. I was mad at everyone, mad that I was enjoying this story as equally as Franny’s, and that it all came crashing down in a sort of unforgivable way.

⚠️ Spoilers:
The dog dies. No, you know what, he was murdered.
There is a pretty graphic scene with one of the wolves, think GoT-like. And others of them who are killed, or die.
Aside from it being released a few years before OTWW, this had to have been inspiration for My Sister, the Serial Killer.
