I enjoyed this book about the loyalty among a group of Depression Dust Bowl women who meet to quilt every week. They come from different backgrounds and are different ages but they share a loyalty to one another that is rare in any group.
Wow. I'm not sure what to say about this book! I was expecting a nice little read about the dust-bowl era, with some memorable and likable characters. And yes, there was that, for sure! After the first chapter, the whole cast of characters left me feeling as dizzy and overwhelmed as newcomer Rita must have felt after her first Persian Pickle Club meeting. But soon I came to appreciate the loyalty of the Pickles -- and the goodheartedness of narrator Queenie and her husband Grover.
What I wasn't expecting was that to have a plot that was just as solidly crafted as the characters were. Maybe I don't read a lot of mysteries, but the twist at the end blew me away. I put down this book feeling satisfied and yet still wanting more, still turning over the events of the book in my head.
Midway through the book there's a rather violent scene -- and even some mild swearing throughout (and one instance of major swearing) -- and yet even my goody-two-shoes self really enjoyed this book in spite of that. A quick, light read with a great message about friendship and loyalty.

This book was hard for me because I liked everything but the two main characters. The rest of the characters were fine, but Queenie and Rita bugged me. Queenie needed a backbone and Rita needed to a little less selfish. I enjoyed learning more about the time period and setting, the quilting aspect was fun, and I loved the friendships between everyone.
I enjoyed this book. It was an interesting glimpse into a life I can't imagine. I liked the take on a group of women living on Kansas farms during the Depression. I felt like I was getting to know the characters as the book progressed and there were some twists and turns I didn't expect. While it was a slow start, overall I couldn't wait to keep reading.
