For a mystery, this book took a really long time to get started. For a novel about friendship there were way too many characters--I still didn't know who half of the women were by the end of the book, but I didn't really care either. For a novel about the Depression it's an ok story, complete with quilting (a main theme), making do, neighborly kindness, drifters, and a touch of violence born of desperation. It reads a bit like a YA novel, but it had a hard time maintaining interest.
A pleasant read. A nice period piece about the depression, with a little mystery added in for flavor. The dialogue rang true--my relatives live in North and South Carolina, and although this book is set in Kansas, the way the characters talked made me homesick.
I liked Queenie. Could not stand Rita or Tom. Quick and easy read about friendship, loyalty, and getting through hard times. The plot twist at the end is what made me bump it from 2 stars to 3. It moved slowly in parts and I was hoping for more character development.
This book was okay. The premise was good, the story was fine, and the characters were nice. But there wasn't much depth to it. I never felt more than a mild interest in the story, even thoug there was a "murder" in it. I wish the characters (other than the main character) were more developed; even at the end I found myself confusing the different club members. This book was easy to read, but I had hoped for more interesting story.
Quick read, fun plot twists, interesting characters, and a little bit of American history.
this was a pretty good story! I recommend it. I wish there was a sequel to it!
A delightful little book, great friendships, and a glimpse of life during the depression. A quick read and worth the time.
