Searing, and no-holds-barred. I am constantly perturbed about how little is the Indian education system concerned with the evils of caste system; everything in our history books treat caste as a thing of the past, instead of a continuing, intentional social hierarchy where those at the bottom are punished with unimaginable cruelty for any transgression. If I had my way, I'd be distributing abridged copies of this to kids, so that they have a clearer image of the country they are growing up in, and use their imaginations to make it better.

I also had the opportunity to read some of Arundhati Roy's preface to Dr. Ambedkar's speech, and one thing she said really stood out to me: India is a market-friendly democracy. Contrasted to several other countries with ongoing crisis of democracy and social inequalities, India appears to be a jolly, happy place with Yoga and Bollywood, to the rest of the world. So if you follow my reviews, and you are not from India, please take a moment today and go read about the plight of minorities, activists and honest journalists, and the corrosion of our justice systems. Neither you, nor I, as individuals can do anything, but at least you will know, and you will remember.

radical and important

Perhaps the most important read in light of the current events.
Ambedkar rips up the foundation of caste system to shreds and comes out triumphant.
90 years later, we can say the needle has moved ever so slightly forward and yet here we are still struggling with this stone age social evil way beyond it's expiry date.
We must understand the responsibility and the urgency of reforming ourselves, it's a perspective change we all must directly face into.
Absolutely riveting read.

This is one of the most important texts that should be made available to and read by more Indians. The fact that I was most surprised by was that I had not even heard of this speech until I started looking for the writings of Dr. Ambedkar. Caste has been and still is an extremely inherent part of Hindu Indian society and one can only imagine the extent to which it has stifled the potential in multiple generations of people from the low caste and untouchables. It was really astonishing to read the opinions on this matter by one of the most influential figures who fought for the rights of these people. Dr. Ambedkar was definitely a person ahead of time. While people may continuously argue over the best way of addressing this issue, this speech remains a very important part of this conversation.
