Ik kan me goed voorstellen dat deze novelle drie awards tegelijk heeft gekregen, want ik vond hem erg leuk en nu moet ik op zoek naar de vervolgen.
Nancy is een jonge meid die door haar ouders naar een internaat wordt gestuurd voor kinderen die het zelfde hebben meegemaakt als zij. Allemaal hebben ze een deur gevonden waardoor ze in een andere wereld terecht zijn gekomen. Maar sommigen komen terug naar deze wereld (als straf of door een andere reden) en voldoen dan niet meer aan wat hun ouders en omgeving verwachten. En dan komen ze op het internaat van Eleanor West terecht. Als Nancy net gearriveerd is wordt een van de andere meisjes dood aangetroffen en wordt het 'nieuwe meisje' daarvoor verantwoordelijk gehouden. Met hulp van Kade en Christhoper probeert ze het raadsel op te lossen.

I greatly enjoyed this book but I had a bit of a tough time getting a handle on where the story was going or what kind of story this was. When a dead body showed up, I was very surprised! I didn't think this would involve a murder mystery.
Aside from that, I enjoyed the world building and characters the most. The main character was fascinating from a writing perspective (all she wants is to be passive but she's the main character oh no!). All the other characters were loveable in their own ways and I just wanted to give them all hugs and tell them it would be okay (although a few probably would have stabbed me for it). I won't say who but I was sad that my favorite character got killed so quickly :(
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the ending but I won't say more for spoiler reasons.
As I find the world intriguing, I will be continuing the series. I had a fun time!
I would recommend this book if you are interested in exploring what it means to belong and the feeling when you don't in a whimsical boarding school with an eclectic cast of characters. Oh and don't mind a murder or two!

I was really surprised with the turn this book took at the halfway mark. And surprised by how gory and dark it got!
I've been meaning to read this for years so I'm happy I finally got around to it!

Also I didn't expect Nancy to go back to her portal world. I'm not sure how I feel about that choice plot wise. Like what was the point of the story then if Nancy just gets to go back but so many people don't? (Well I guess Jack gets to as well, and Loreli's door was open at her parents house). On the other hand it's nice that she got to go back because that's what she wanted but I feel like that decision leads to a lack 'oomph' for the end.I've been meaning to read this for years so I'm happy I finally got around to it!

This is a spooky beautiful ride. It’s fast and easy to read, while somehow also tackling deep topics (the whole series is like this). It’s like comfort food that is complex and nuanced. I’m fast becoming a fan of Seanan McGuire

Mi è piaciuto un sacco. L'idea di partenza era molto interessante, poiché si parla di una scuola dove gli studenti sono reduci da viaggi in luoghi magici dove sentivano di appartenere, ma da dove sono tornati indietro. Quindi per tutto il romanzo c'è in tutti un forte desiderio di tornare indietro, e quindi è forte anche il tema di voler stare dove si sente di appartenere e quindi di dove veramente ci si senta a casa. I personaggi sono stati in luoghi tutti diversi e questo li ha resi persone tutte diverse tra loro. E questa direi che è stata la mia cosa preferita, la diversità. Sia dal punto di vista sessuale, infatti c'è un personaggio asessule e uno transgender, ma anche di carettere e personalità.
È una storia breve e scorrevole con uno stile di scrittura che fa trasparire la magia che è intrinseca in tutti i mondi. Non vedo l'ora di leggere il prossimo e consiglio a tutti la serie!
