still trying out short stories even though they still aren’t quite my thing. i prefer longer stories when i do enjoy them more and a lot of the ones in this volume were quite short. i enjoyed the nonfiction essays in here better than the stories because of the reflections and context on translation choices and the literary landscape in modern day china.

A collection with great range. Lots of strong stories. What Does the Fox Say, Dragonslayinh, and the title story were particularly stand-out for me. The nonfiction essays were excellent, too

While I enjoyed the stories, I especially appreciated the essays as they provided so much insight on cultural and gender concerns in Chinese writing and translation. I'd love to see more of that kind of writing from other cultures as well.

Short stories is not the right format for me at the moment as I have limited time to read and need to be pulled along by a story. I probably would have finished eventually if it wasn't due back at the library before I could finish.
