Over all an interesting work of historical fiction, a twist on the typical grail story, intimately involved in 2 time lines. Be patient with it, it is a slow set up in the beginning, setting up the two story lines in times apart. But without realizing it, the story of Alice has sucked you under and you are waiting for the next turn and how the two ladies come together. The ending seemed a bit rushed, overall good. Only really annoying thing was in mass of untranslated French, not needed.

I can’t. I can’t. I won’t. I don’t need to. I tried. I skimmed some pages. I tried. I feel sorry for Alaïs, as I like her, but I hate everything else. The story is taking way too long to make sense, half of the pages are just descriptions of what they ate and smell. They smell everything. So many smells. And then I read some reviews to see if I was the only one. No.

This did it for me:
“The air was hot and humid. It seemed to squat over the yard and buildings like a malignant Buddha.”

What?!

Enough. I’m going to the library.

I still count it to my total as I read almost half of it.

I really enjoyed about 90% of this book but I thought the ending really let it down. It was lacking the detail that had gone into other aspects of the story.

I expected more out of this book. I really liked the historical part and the current day part in the beginning, but towards the end I didn't like where it was heading. It didn't keep my attention very well and I wasn't really a page turner. I wished this book would've been better.

Not sure why, but I struggled to get into this book. It's almost as if they story just wouldn't grab me (except right towards the end) and it wasn't a bad story/plot at all. It was always going to be an average book (periodic fluff, as somone in book club put it), but I thought I'd be caught up in it more than I was.
