So, so good. Masterful unweaving of this story throughout the books. Really fascinating magic system. Incredibly powerful understanding of people, community and consequences. Felt like my lingering questions were mostly answered. This trilogy does not shy away from pain and how it carries with you and shapes you, and while the work was fiction the characters felt the more real from it and as readers we can learn more from it and about ourselves in how we react.

This trilogy is really something else. It surprises you all the way up to the end. Even though you seem to grasp the core concepts of the forces at work in the book, the totality of it remains just at the edge of understanding, creating a tense and compelling atmosphere, all while telling a story that feels epic despite taking place over the space of...a year?? less?? i don't know just read the damn series.

P.S. There's also a whole lot of racial and environmental overtones that make it incredibly relevant to all the crap we've gotten ourselves into

i got so much more out of this whole trilogy this time around & i'm simply in awe of how jemisin constructed such a rich alive universe with such total history. there is nothing like this series!!!! (also i frankly think it is absurd that some people say the trilogy gets worse after the fifth season all 3 books are FLAWLESSLY CONSTRUCTED they could not be better in any way)

Every moment in the first two novels builds perfectly into this. I cannot express how satisfied I was by this conclusion.
