I don’t even know how I can write a review without giving away spoilers. Please read TW, there is violence, death, blood play, etc. I don’t know how I feel about the ending. It’s not a typical HEA but more a happy for now. I know there’s a part 2 that will cover Wrights story. I guess I’m kind of sad because I thought Sadie loved both brothers and that Wright loved her back and they say as much but he moves on to be somewhere else which clearly he’ll find another to love there. At the end of the day Wright deserves happiness and I hope he finds it. I find it hard that the second book will be better than this one. I am definitely on a book high.
I love how this wasn’t your typical shifter wolf story. It’s based in the 1950s post WW2. Sadie, Wright, and Ridge have tragic backstories. Wright lost his true mate and son which he thought was due to his brother when he shifted to a wolf for the first time while he was off at war fighting. Ridge was raised by his brother and wife Jess because his parents left when he was 5, which was never explained. He didn’t remember the day he shifted and couldn’t confirm if he in fact killed Jess and her son. The shock of it made him feral and he stayed a wolf for 3 years until Wright came home. Sadie’s mother died of reasons not explained in book and this caused her father to turn to alcohol where he became physically and emotionally abusive towards Sadie. One day she packs her bags and her father finds them while in a drunken haze and he burns her stuff and shoots her in the head and hangs himself right after. A creature she believes to be the devil convinces her she’s dead and that he’ll let her live if she finds an evil soul to kill and trade her soul with. She agrees and finds herself in the small town where she first meets Ridge who believes he’s evil and now kills for the joy of it. He’s hunting for prey when he comes across her and he would have killed her but she shoots him and gets away. She finds herself at his brothers Wright’s house and he decides to protect her when he usually tries to stay out of his brothers way.
Wright realizes as time passes that Sadie is Ridges true mate and he has to explain that to Ridge since he’s feral and doesn’t understand. He also falls in love with Sadie. When Sadie tells him of the deal she made with the “devil” he goes to her house to see what he can find. He ends up making a counter deal with the devil.
I understand Wright falling in love with Sadie was a way for him to realize he can find true happiness when he thought it wasn’t possible. He needed to go off on his own to find himself after being lost for so long. The ending made sense but I was rooting for them to all live HEA together and not apart. A part of me wants to stay in denial and not read the second book but I also want to see Wright happy. So I will be reading the second book in hopes I’m not disappointed with the outcome. I really enjoyed this book. There are a lot of sex scenes with Ridge and Sadie that come with triggers for some. It wasn’t my kind of spice but the storyline is what kept me interested.

This book will not be for everyone, but for those it IS for?
It will change you. It will split you open. You will cry, you will laugh, you will... do other things that Wright would be disappointed in us for talking about in a public forum...
Heed the trigger warnings, but if you can handle them then you are in for a fantastic ride.
I devoured this book in a day. I couldn't inhale it fast enough, I never wanted it to end. The prose was lush and immersive, the pace was fast (except for when it deliberately lingered, like all good things should), and the characters were fascinating and real. The romance was terrifying and exhilarating and devastating. The obsession, the passion, the frenzy of everything was a whirlwind in the best way.
This is one of those books that the minute you finish it, you are filled with regret because you will never, ever get to experience it for the first time again. And holy hell is it an experience.
Shiloh is on my list of absolute favorite authors, now, and will never be dethroned. This writing is goals. It is godtier.

Ridge is terrifying and tempting all in one breath. Wright is the calm before the storm. Sadie is one lucky gal.
This dark romance definitely kept my interest- so much so that I read it while in labor with my baby. Contractions don’t stand a chance against this story.

I really liked the premise of the book and I had thought it was going to go in a completely different direction than it did. The prose itself is intensely gripping and is the strongest positive aspect of this books for me. The actual writing is the only reason I’m giving it a star and half. I had my hopes that the author would do something interesting with the storyline. My hopes were dashed by the second half of the book. The ending felt lazy and contrived. I had hoped the author would lean more into the horror aspect and not give this couple a happy ending. The mmc is an unapologetic monster and the fmc is the typical doe eyed idiot who is soooo pure she can love a man who violates and cannibalizes women on the regular but is too good to kill someone objectively evil to save her own life. She tells wright (MMCs brother) to give him a chance and believe he can change and then calls wright cruel when he says that’s not possible. Mind you this is after Wright told her the mmc killed his wife and kid. She goes on and on about mmc changing (even having a ‘this isn’t you’ moment) but he literally never does. It’s implied he’s still killing and eating women (tho not sa-ing them anymore that’s just for the fmc). Anyway this book was gripping but by the end it’s just like every other dark romance book you could possibly find. I’m sad I wasted three hours on it

This was super dark and intense, and at times made me question what I was reading. Stick it out to the end though. It's a beautifully dark twisted obsessive paranormal romance.

Damn, if this lady can't write the first half of an extremely compelling story.... the last half lost me tho. The sex scenes were too non-consental, so I skipped a good portion of each.
I don't read a lot of horror erotica or shifter romances, but when I do, this is the type of story I am looking for. Then, Earth Swallowed Ocean by [a:Shiloh Sloane|22098368|Shiloh Sloane|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] is a dark, paranormal, enemies-to-lovers romance. It's a lyrical, gritty and haunting story about two werewolves hiding in plain sight in post-WW2 Appalachia .. and how a deal between the devil and a human girl catapults her right into their path.
Potential triggers: suicide, abuse, neglect, blood and gore, murder, grief and loss, non-con between love interests.
While reading I couldn't help but think that this story is like a cross between Hemlock Grove and [b:The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue|50623864|The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue|V.E. Schwab|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1584633432l/50623864._SY75_.jpg|46895612], which both happen to be favourites of mine in their respective genres.
Werewolves are illustrated to perfection in this story, in my opinion. Ridge and Wright are more animal than human whether they want to admit it or not. Ridge especially, having given into this animalistic side of him, is a primal beast with zero moral compass and an insatiable hunger for human flesh. And Sadie? Well, she's the perfect prey.
This book won't be for everyone. Not only is it incredibly dark, there are also some elements to the story that can be frustrating for romance readers. For me, this was the perfect mix of unhinged, evocative and original with the most delectable prose I could ask for. I went in blind and was surprised quite a few times with the direction... but in a good way! Sloane did not hold back in her writing and I give her major props for that. She is incredibly talented and has a unique writer's voice that I love — I'm already feral for the next book in this series and cannot wait to see what else she writes!
All three characters tugged at my heart and as their backstories unraveled, I fell harder and harder.
The blurb promises "demonic levels of horniness" and that would be correct. There is tons of sex in this book.. more than I anticipated but welcomed all the same. It's unhinged werewolf erotica at its finest, and I loved every second of it.
I don't know what else to say about this story other than it was an experience, and that I'm still chewing on it. I would recommend this to any dark paranormal romance readers that want something a little outside-the-box, appreciate true enemies to lovers, rich and evocative writing and creative storytelling.

"He hears most people like they’re yelling but her voice is perfect. Like waves in the ocean. He’s been landlocked for years."

This is the most beautifully written body-horror I've ever read. It felt like poetry, not prose. I finished this book a few weeks back, and I find myself reflecting back on Shiloh Sloane's words more than the story itself. Although I couldn't put the book down while reading, the characters and plot are already fading from my mind. But that prose? My gosh, it was beautiful. The writing style of this book is what turned it from a 4-star rating to a 5-star rating.
I see this listed as dark romance often, but I want any future reader to know that this is predominantly a body-horror novel. Grotesque and bloody... not gore, but painful, torturous transformation of the body and soul. I love it, but know that's not everyone's cup of tea. So beware before you dive in if body-horror is one of your triggers. Oh, and lots of triggers. Just FYI.
