3.95 AVERAGE

Was it really necessary to rip my heart out three times? But that isn't why this book was 4 stars instead of 5. The ending felt... Unresolved. Lukumi, the true nature of the gene, the full extent of Mara and Noah's entwined lives through the the blessing/curse, what happened to Stella and etc weren't fully explained and therefore left the book unresolved.

However! I really enjoyed the concept of the gene and how love someone can love so much and so freely. I think that's really sweet. I especially love Jamie! Everyone needs a Jamie.. :3

Edit***
After my friend reminded me about the short note by the author about her real name being changed and this being something she herself wrote I've come to realize that this book is the bomb

This book really blurred the line between life and death, which was pretty confusing while reading as I kept getting confused at the last quarter of the book who died and who is alive. This book was a good sequel but I can't say that it was amazing because it lacked in some points. I waited for this book for too long but when I began reading it I got bored at the first quarter of the book. Overall, the book was good and a good sequel but it could've been better.

4.5 ☆

The villain is the hero of her own story.

Summary
Mara is being kept against her will at the Horizons by people who claim that they want to help her suppress her ability. But getting rid of her powers is the last thing Mara wants. Because what she wants is revenge.

Writing
Previously, I have been annoyed by Hodkin's inconsistent writing style. But in this book it actually started to work out really well. She uses very beautiful language during those slower scenes, when she tries to build suspense. And when the action starts, she switches to very brisk, compendious writing. It works so well! I am incredibly impressed.

Characters
In this book Mara embraced her darker side and I really liked it. It felt very refreshing. I was surprised by her character arc in the best way possible.

Oh! And there was almost no Noah in this book which was a delightful treat.

Plot
The book starts out strong and stays that way until the end, with only a couple of slower chapters thrown here and there. I really enjoyed the pacing. It definitely kept me interested and engaged.

This entire series was built on mystery after mystery after mystery. So, since it's the ending to the trilogy, I was excited to finally get my answers… but I didn't get them. Yes, some things were resolved, but there is still of lot of loose threads. And at this point I don't know if it's messy writing or an attempt to make people read the spin-off series.

The next paragraph contains a minor spoiler.

And can we talk about that sex scene? How cringy was it? Ugh, I don't know, maybe I am getting old. But if my non-french boyfriend started talking to me in french during sex I wouldn't be able to do anything else but laugh at him. I am sorry, but instead of sexy, you just sound stupid. What a way to ruin the mood.

Overall
This would have been a pretty good, but unmemorable book if it wasn't for the last line. The very last line in this book managed to change my entire opinion on this series and gave me deeper understanding of everything that happened in this story. I realized how many important messages it carries and how I managed to miss most of them. I am nothing if not impressed by that. That was one of the most surprising experiences in my entire reading career. Kudos to the author!

Content warnings: rape attempt, self-injurious behaviour, blood, needles

I honestly wasn't expecting to like this book or the series. I was slow to get invested in the story. However, once I started to understand the basis of everything, things picked up for me. I liked it...not loved. I am interested to see how the Noah Shaw book turns out, even though I didn't fully enjoy how this one ended.

I did not finish it, I think it's because it took so long for this book to come out that I lost interest in it as a whole. Maybe one day I'll finish it. But for now, it's gonna stay in my dnf list.

Thrilling, gut wrenching at times but all in all I enjoyed reading it. So many more questions and I felt like you mainly got answers after mostly confusion. There are a few plot points that are just ridiculous but hey I'll live.

[3.5 Stars] I adored the first two books in this trilogy so much, and this was probably my least favorite of the three. I think at the end of the day this book is a fairly decent conclusion, but I wanted more. I wanted more explanation, more of just about everything. I also wasn't entirely convinced by everything this book really did explain. Regardless, I do really enjoy this trilogy, it just didn't have a very good ending.

3.5 stars? I was enjoying the book until the last 1/4. Then it just kind of fell flat to me. As I was reading the book, I found myself wondering if she had planned everything out originally or if she wrote herself into a corner and had to write herself out.
