Meh. I’m generally not a fan of contemporary romance so that’s part of it. Read for romance book group theme “literary”.

The “twist” was obvious from the start as was the choice she’d make. I thought it was predictable and boring with A LOT of detailed food descriptions. I only finished because I was reading for book group.

Spicy sex on page if that’s your thing.

definitely enjoyed this read! both guys were frustrating throughout most of the novel, but came around to one of them towards the end. I really love the character development of the lead and enjoy the supporting characters of her grandma and her best friend.

I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. The banter and chemistry between the characters kept me enganged but the love story kind of lacked. Reid was the best choice but I wish Lawrence wasn't made to be such an asshole cliche. If I didn't listen to the audio while reading I don't think I would have finished.

Zora is a strong fmc and I loved her from start to finish.
The vibes were there ar times, this would be a maybe if I was to recommend it to anyone.

I enjoyed the DC culture and commentary! As a frequenter of indie bookstores in DC, I liked hearing about Zora’s work. Another highlight was the food descriptions, all of which made me hungry. That being said, not sure what was goin on with the plot. I feel like 90% of this book was just Zora going on dinner dates and chatting about her life. And then she’d go back to her friend and be like hm that was a little boring and I’m like…it was also more than a little boring to read. It was also set up as a mystery, but the hints were too heavy handed. If the plot twist had actually made me gasp, that would’ve been a huge redeeming quality of the book, but alas. Many thoughts.

Pros:
-great to see a community with people lifting each other up
-wonderful show of black pride
-delicious descriptions of food
-Audiobook performance is phenomenal

Cons:
-I thought the "twist" was obvious from the very beginning, especially for a character who reads a lot of mysteries.

I loved this book from the first paragraph. It felt like a real human story, something that everyone would have to deal with.

The character of Zora felt very familiar to me and her relationship with her family was amazing.

My only con for this book was there are some descriptions that are too long. Like the food or make up BUT they’re small things!

Amazing book and I can’t wait to read the authors backlog!

More of a 3.5. The story was cute, and I am all about a self confident plus size black girl. Add in the fact that she owns a book store, and I am all in. I didn't like the love triangle. The issues were clear, Red flags giant, and she still had a hard time? Nope, not my things. I wished we had spent more time in the relationship she chose.
