Amazing story! it was funny, romantic, erotic in its own quirky way, dramatic, action packed and utterly devastating in its wartales. It's a great piece of evidence of the mindset of us Danes, our way of handling things and it made me remember why I love my native language.

I think part of my excellent reading experience was that I had bought a very loved and battered pocket that was extremely pleasant to read but of course the content of the book was excellent to. I can't quite figure out exactly why I loved this novel. The writing is very well done and the story flows beautiful. But the actual story wasn't a favorite of mine.

This book is a delight. It's hard to describe bc if you ask me "what is it about?" I would have to say it's a story that covers a century. Only it's not one story it's many. It's about the sea. And the sailor town of Marstal in Denmark. There's love and loss, relationships and loneliness. It's about holding onto the past and what made you, but it's also about looking at the future and the possibilities of what you can be. Its a beast of a book, for sure--the density makes it hard to get a hold at first. But once you're in, you will be taken by the sea, the characters, and the adventure.

Hell of a book. Recommended if you like: Melville, exploration, seafaring, cultural changes of the 20th century, or just a good yarn.

So I picked up this book in a store and opened it to a random page, where it read, "I began to think. What I thought about was death." (paraphrase.. I'm too lazy to go pick up the book.)

THIS BOOK IS BRILLIANT. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because I was SLIGHTLY disappointed in ONE aspect of the ending. It was important to me, but many people might not care that it wasn't addressed..

We, The Drowned spans three generations of sailors from the tiny town of Marstal. It's part historical-fiction, part sailing story, part romance, part ghost story. IT IS WONDERFUL.

As amazing as this book is supposed to be, I just couldn't get into it. The style just didn't work for me -- don't know if that relates to it being translated or not.
