A third of the way into the book we (and Nora) are still getting lectures on media training and trying to hire and interview staff, complete with backstories. The slow pacing really started to drag here, along with the tell-don’t-show attitude towards a lot of developments. Nora and Liam are both very blandly nice and make a lot of split-second judgments regarding personality and trust - which, because this is a gentle book, are always correct, but which in turn undercut the fact that the book is about brutal political maneuvering at the highest possible level.

I’m also going to add that there are an awful lot of
SpoilerEvil Moms
here. One
SpoilerEvil Mom
, okay, fine, but two smacks of authorial carelessness.

This has been the most enjoyable book of the series for me. I really like how the plot developed and seeing the interactions between new characters. The new environment resulted in new dynamics and problems which made for an easy and interesting read. It is perhaps the most fast paced of the series, likely due to the planetary environment rather than space. The plot continues to intrigue me and I liked the ending, it is less abrupt than prior books and sets up the next phase.

The writing improved in this book too. The issues in book 2 & 3 with unnecessary rehashing of the same information is not as prevalent in this book and it has a big positive impact on reading. It still lingers a little but at this point it can be largely ignored.

I really enjoyed finally seeing more interactions between Nora and Liam. Despite the issue with the pacing, their relationship is loving and cute and a highlight of the book. I also liked seeing him step into the father role for Aria and the big brother for Cherry. Dominic was an unexpected and likeable character, I loved his interactions with Nora.

This book leaves me with the same positive feelings as book 1 and I will go straight to book 5. I’m very interested in seeing Nora achieve her goals and seeing how the different plots and problems play out. Learning more from Jonah is always a favourite part.

I am really enjoying this series

This sci-fi series is alot of fun, who knew that a xeno-archaeologist could have such an amazing life, it turns out she indeed can, along with an alien AI, her daughter, her partner, a few crown princes, a truck load of blaze, and much more all combine to make this a wonderful read
