Almost weightless and totally smooth: Cunningham's narrator stands athwart mid-2000's history, shrugging his shoulders. The Great Gatsby comparisons feel apt. David Hampton is a Nick Carraway for our whimpering 20's, pleasurably confident in his lack of confidence. Cunningham's written a novel about Obama that has almost nothing to do with politics; instead, it's about being young, gifted and Black in an elite world that's assiduously, grossly eager to have you. David is protected and nurtured by strong, interesting Black women, and eventually finds out that
Spoiler he's been party to a massive fraud
, and he doesn't even mind. How glorious it is to be an Millennial.

The portraits of drug and alcohol use in here were somewhat unbelievable, unfortunately so, because Cunningham can write a great sex scene, and he totally knows it.

Two competing books for me. One which I devoured about a campaign and another that focused more on the narrator which I found myself glossing over.

I'm not sure what to think of this novel. It's something if a coming-of-age story about a young man learning the contours of his world in the context of his participation in the 2008 presidential election. There's a sense of hope, disillusionment, and something like acceptance. It was interesting to look back at that time from David's perspective, but I'm not sure this one is going to stick with me.

I found this book largely boring and pretentious with occasional sparks of interest or humor.
