Too slow, too distant, too meandering. So much tell, not enough show, and way too many subjects attempted within the confines of one book. The man can write some beautiful sentences, but as is usually the case, he also needed a better editor to move him in better directions, fewer topics attempted, and more feeling to show us instead of telling us. The latter caused a level of distance throughout that made the book unenjoyable to the point that I sped through whole sections (audio) at 1.85 to get past them. I really wanted to love this book, and as expressed by other folks on here, I think part of people being disappointed is in the misleading marketing of it as it is less about working for Obama, and instead a coming-of-age story.

This book wasn’t what I expected. I heard Vinson Cunningham talk about the book and his experience on the campaign on the New Yorker Radio Hour, but this wasn’t really a political campaign story as much as it was a coming-of-age story. So don’t surprised when “the Senator” is hardly developed as a character.
Some of the writing is distracting—like "dolphinish teeth" for how rude it is, "verdant eyebrows," because I know he didn't mean someone has green eyebrows. But most of the prose is captivating, like the scenes at the bar, in the photos, and in childhood memories.
