Gorgeous journalistic/descriptive/critical writing and even characterization but a passive protagonist with daddy issues ultimately underwhelmed? Technically impressive but maybe a little aloof (omg just like BHO was this the point all along?!?)
I’ve really liked Vinson as a guest on “Hang Up and Listen.” And campaign memoirs can be fascinating.
But this is more just a personal memoir with the campaign as a framing device. And a lot of the memories become tales of other people that largely felt discursive, rather than enlightening (even if some hints about his father’s friends have a muted but devastating payoff).
The language sometimes interested me, but often felt like it was trying too hard to be misty and lyrical.

Elegant writer but not my style. The portions about the campaign, especially the brief flashes of Obama, kept me going but the florid descriptions of every place and person was too much. I agree a reader needs some level descriptions to get a sense of people or place, but then just let the reader’s imagination go and move on.

Two hours into the book and it didn’t pull me in. It felt predictable and the reflections on society didn’t add anything that I haven’t already heard before.
