Gladwell is a fascinating writer and thorough researcher. I found this book to be well-written and make some very interesting connections. That said he does meander at times and I often found myself saying aloud “this is very interesting but what does it have to do with relating to strangers...?” He eventually got back to his thesis but in many chapters it took a minute to get there. I enjoyed the journey but did, occasionally, find my mind wandering a bit while reading.
Difficult to decide on a rating. It was super interesting but I’m not sure I agree with all his conclusions. The studies were fascinating but they are all pretty heavy subjects - pedophile, rape, suicide, wrongful imprisonment, and torture. Lots to think about on how I interact with strangers and how I can view others.
Malcom is a favorite for a reason. Highly recommend the audio version.
This book is a great reminder of how we should strive to be, and how we continually fall short. But we have to keep making an effort. I feel like everyone needs to hear this.

It’s safe to say I’m a Malcom Gladwell fan. Not necessarily because I agree with everything he has to say, but because his works can spark discussion. This one has so many topics relevant to the courses I teach, I am going to use it as required text for one of them—a methodology course. Not using the book as how to do research, but to challenge students to find research topics out of the chapters as well as to incite discussion and even invite students to disagree, using academic evidence to back up their stances.

Very insightful. Great at helping us question our own assumptions. Half history, half psychology.

not at ALL what I was expecting going into it, a ton of dark themes when I thought I was gonna read about how to talk to strangers. still really good though, I learned a lot even though it wasn't what I thought I was going to learn. even though every chapter was a lesson on how we talk to and understand strangers, I didn't get the overarching theme and how they connected. instead I learned about why cops pull people over for no reason and how we drink too much.

All his books are quite repetitive imo. If you've read one, you've practically read them all.
