There's nothing wrong with the story, but it's just very reminiscent of other fantasy stories out there. What made the first book great was it's uniqueness and in the sequel it lost that edge.

No second book slump here. I enjoyed the plot more than the first book because it felt more fast paced with tension and mystery. I love plotting. The character work of the siblings was maybe lacking a bit, but I liked how they reflected on their actions and questioned if it was worth it.
I can't wait to see how this ends!! It's going to be so messy but great!
I was a little unsure how I felt about the last tattoo, but once it was revealed what actually happened, I loved the outcome.
This book held my interest with its terrifying heist type format from start to finish. There were some character additions in this book and new perspectives. I find it weird that Theo continues to not have a viewpoint in these books. I hope in the future he does get a viewpoint, because that would be interesting. Anyway, on to the review.
I had never heard of this author before and it was a whim that made me pick up the first book and a whim that made me grab the second, because even though the first book was pretty good and had a great surprise ending, I wasn't sure. The world was interesting enough that I thought I'd give it a shot.
This book did not disappoint! The magical rules became richer and more defined. There were additional locations added to flesh out this world. There were new characters. The lessons learned by these characters were many and varied. Basically, this book is like a deity asking these characters, what would you sacrifice for revenge? In almost every instance, the answer for our characters was something dear. In the end, I wonder how these characters felt after they were left lying in ashes, was it worth it? There's a third book coming and I am very excited to see how this all plays out.
