I wasn't sure I'd read the sequel but I did, and it was much better than the first book. Ren is more likable or at least unlikable in more palatable ways. The plot is more interesting. The person who wears magic-infused tattoos he can deploy in battle was an interesting addition.
I'll probably read book three. This series is a more violent than I usually like. Will it end happily or with everyone dead? Could go either way.

Didn't like the epilogue with the mysterious "master" over their chessboard with the pieces in play. Overdone, just tell us who. Or just wait until book three.I'll probably read book three. It was not as great as the first book, in my opinion, but was still a solid sequel. I really enjoyed the deadly adventure from the first book and the second book is more political. The cliff hangers at the end of each book are great and make me want to immediately read the next book. I like the addition of the new characters and their POVs.

There's something really alluring about the way Scott Reintgen writes - the style manages to be simple, honest, blunt, yet beautiful, not boring or condescending. While I didn't find myself caring about much of the character in this one nearly as much, I was still compelled to keep reading in a way I am not often these days. However, the execution of the revenge narrative was certainly creative, but un-nuanced in a way that I didn't find especially interesting; and rather than exploring the magic system we already had, I think this book introduced too many new ones in a manner that didn't allow for more than a shallow brush on each, which made any victories and twists seem... too cheap? Because instead of exploiting the rules of magic, anyone could just be like 'welp this is a NEW kind of magic/magic special to this character, which is DIFFERENT than the magic that is special to their relative!!' Eh. I wanted to spend more time with Ren than Dahvid.
This sequel was very disappointing. It was too all over the place

4.5 stars - The Waxways series is my favorite series I have read this year! I typically don't leave reviews but this book deserves it, I really enjoy the storyline, plot, arcs, side quests, and even all the tropes. Nothing feels overdone and it is always an enjoyable time when I read this. I felt like this book did not drag anywhere everything was smooth and clean.
The second book is better than the first book, and I think the addition of multiple character POVs is part of the reason why. The multiple POV thing is something I really enjoyed, it typically isn't something I like but this one is done well and I feel like all the characters are fleshed out and have their own stories. I am glad Theo does not have a POV as I feel like it would be too similar to others we have and I like the mystery of not knowing all the angles and learning with the MC. I feel like this series is criminally underrated and I am very excited for the next book when it comes out.
To the people who said this is similar to the Scholomance you were right to an extent but this series is much better in my opinion!
