A fast, fun read and modern adaptation of The Jungle Book that at times focuses too much on its source material rather than exploring the world that it created.

I have loved reading more of Gaiman's catalog recently.  The wit, and cozy feeling fo this story was fantastic.  He has a way of writing these stories that pulls you in and lulls you into a welcomed trance.

This story is about Bod. Short for Nobody Owens. A Strange man killed his family when he was a baby and he was raised by the ghosts in a graveyard. He also has a mysterious guardian.  As we watch him grow, we learnore about the graveyard, these amazing characters, his guardian,  and all of the interesting dealings of the worlds we cannot see as the living.

I love the way Gaiman pulls things together in his novels. Every detail makes sense. Nothing is there that doesn't need to be. Everything is in it's place. Every character has their distinct voice and purpose.  I enjoy his writing SO MUCH. If you haven't read his books I highly recommend starting with this YA novel or my favorite,  Neverwhere.

In my (probably not very educated) opinion, Gaiman’s best books are the ones I’d describe as “what Tim Burton would have loved to read as a child”. Books with an ideal audience of delightfully sinister children, or adults that (gods forbid!) dare to read a “children’s book” without the excuse of reading it to a child. Books like Coraline, The Ocean at the End of the Lane (my personal favourite), and this one.

Well, I’m definitely an adult and I enjoyed every single page of The Graveyard Book. This book is dark, funny, mysterious, adorable and a long list of adjectives that would seem to be opposites of each other. It’s full of memorable characters and poignant moments, and it evokes such intricate imagery that even the beautiful illustrations don’t do it justice.

And that’s why I wouldn’t mind it in the least if Gaiman took a break from his “adult” books and continued writing more of this stuff, where his unique voice makes itself heard and his talent for crafting beautifully weird, dark and whimsical stories is truly unparalleled.

This gave me spooky stories around the campfire vibes and I loved it so much. Neil Gaiman books are like reading a Tim Burton movie and I’m obsessed

Nothing really wrong with this book, it was just not for me, in that it's definitely geared towards kids and I just wanted something more complex as an adult. I did love the relationship between Bod and Silas, I didn't get why bod had a set of parents and Silas as his guardian, when it felt like Silas did most of the work raising Bod.

Escapism and comfort, that’s what you get.

s104
“Does it work? Are they happier dead?”
“Sometimes. Mostly, no. It’s like the people who believe they’ll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn’t work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you. If you see what I mean.”

s306
”’Face your life
Its pain, its pleasure,
Leave no path untaken’”

s307
“But between now and then, there was Life; and Bod walked into it with his eyes and his heart wide open.”
