Raw and real AF. Any fan of Stanhope knows what they're in for. Anyone unfamiliar, proceed with caution.

If you're going in, get the audiobook. It's one of the most naturally-read listening experiences I've ever enjoyed.

Stanhope goes off the material constantly, peppering in commentary about the proceedings. There are podcast-style breaks too featuring interviews with characters from Doug's life as they relate to the book.

The story starts and ends with a tragedy but it's packed with laughs and heart all along the way.

Hilarious, profane, and often tasteless. A page-turner about Stanhope's life and his relationship with his mother. I haven't followed his career that much, but I still enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook, which might have been better than reading it. He had a lot of hilarious asides and some interviews with friends at the end of some chapters, sort of like a podcast approach. I almost drove off the road a few times, I was laughing so hard.

This was a fine soundtrack to Sunday chores. Wanted something I wouldn't have to pay attention to, and it delivered.

Excellent book. Could almost hear doug read it to me. Loved hearing about his roots and happy there wasn't huge crossover from his stand up. A crude yet strangely heartwarming book that begins and ends with suicide.

Get the audiobook!!

This is a fun and entertaining work. If you're familiar with his podcast or simply with his stand-up then you must get the audio version because it's him and "the gang" reading the book, adding stories and commentaries and sometimes going off script telling stories. It's mostly an autobiography, with added stories about his mother and some gossip and trash-talking.

Stanhope has never been a mainstream comedian, and this book is no different from his act. Nevertheless, I think this book is much more polished than anything he has done, so I'm glad that after all that booze and drugs he hasn't lost his edge.

Audio book review.
No rating - memoir.

OMG listen to this book in audio. You must. You absolutely must. Trigger warnings for language and sexual content. These things come flying out of nowhere in the narration, so be on your guard! Lol.
I was drawn in from the first few chapters, the relationship Doug has with his mother, his quirky way of speaking and recalling stories, his blunt and honest delivery. There were bits in the middle that were slower-paced, but then something truly shocking would be said, or the narrator would change, and suddenly you're drawn back in and reminded that this guy really doesn't care what you or anyone else thinks. At one point, Doug actually is stumbling over his words so much he just goes "Fuck it, I'm just gonna tell you the story" and goes off-script. I LOVE the mixed narration, the insertion of candid interviews with those in the book, the brutally honest language that doesn't shy away from any sensitive topic. I also love the fact that for probably most of the narration, Doug is drinking and it affects his performance. There's even a random belch in there. There are disgusting bits, like the one wedding scene with the tampon (gag!), but overall, it's a truly unique memoir. Not for the faint of heart.
