Like many folks who read this one, it was interesting to see a Bronte work before Charolette was as polished as she became. However, the themes/characters/plot in this book were all better done in Villete. Overall, I enjoyed my time with Charolette Bronte’s writing. She still doesn’t like a catholic though, yiiikes.

Mostly a three star read, enjoyable enough without being particularly gripping. A few things really interfered with even that low key enjoyment though, and made me drop my rating.

First, and the major point, a low key but clear prejudice against the Flemish/Belgian people pervaded the whole story. As random as that feels from the time and place I’m reading from, it’s still disturbing.

Second, I was frustrated by the implication in one conversation that staying home as a wife is doing nothing and not compatible with being ‘active’. I even liked the eventual results in the story, just not the premise used for getting there.

Third, and just a minor annoyance, but I had to copy a number of conversations into google translate to understand them, because I am not a properly educated lady the era and DO NOT  SPEAK FRENCH.
