I usually like stories that intertwine classical stories. I don't really know much about Illias, but I liked those parts. The problem in Illias's story was the main character, whom I really disliked. I didn't find the reason to root for him.
The dislikable hero was probably something the author was going for, as the "present" earth storyline has the same problem. At least in this one, the character grew out of his assholery.
Moravec storyline I liked more, and mostly because the characters in it were interesting.
Overall the whole book felt like a build-up for the sequel, where everything will get explained.

Dan Simmons is quickly becoming one of my favorite fantasy authors. After reading through his entire Hyperion Cantos, I was recommended this book to read, which is the first of two books. There are so many divergent storylines that come together only at the very end. Throughout the book, you can see how much research and learning went into his writing, which only enhances the quality of the experience and interactions between the characters.
