The basic premise is that this brianiac chick with limited social skills is so desperate to havea baby that she agrees to be a "birthday present" for a football player. She does get the result she is after, but when he finds out he forces her to get married to him. They then move to his hometown where they have to work out their differences--with a little help from his family and friends.[return]A pretty predictable "marriage of convience" romance, way too unbelievable and focused on all the wrong things. Good for an escape from reality.

Allegedly about two "smart" people. Much more about concerns of status and privilege, preoccupied with stereotypes of "smart" people. Just saying, a professor with research and teaching (though nothing about tenure?) concerns is not going to be hung up on a man's SAT score from 19 years prior as the sole quantifier of his intelligence.

Part way through this book I was so ready to rate it a 2 stars.

I did not like either of the MCs for at least the first half. I was really against Jane's actions in the beginning, but then Cal was like the BIGGEST asshole and I was then really against him (like, Jane deserved it but I feel like eventually he crossed the line).

Honestly, I wanna say that around 60-70% I started warming up to them. But then I really enjoyed them. I thought Cal coming to terms with his emotions and Jane standing up for herself were so awesome.

All in all, the beginning was 2 stars, the end was 4 so I'm giving it a 3.

5 stars

Nobody—and I do mean no body—crafts a comedic enemies-to-lovers story as well as Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Period. Oh, and arrogant jerks. Somehow she creates these arrogant and bull-headed alphas who are so sweet at heart that they easily win you over. And her heroines? I always adore her gutsy heroines. Basically, I’m a huge SEP fan in case you can’t tell. Nobody’s Baby But Mine is the third book in the Chicago Stars series, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as the previous books.

I fell in love with Jane Darlington. She’s attractive, but not gorgeous. Her body is far from flawless, she dresses conservatively, and she doesn’t have a seductive bone in her body. She’s flawed, funny, determined, and loveable. It’s great when the ordinary girl gets the hunk.

Cal Bonner is a stubborn, aging NFL quarterback. Jane comes along when he’s at a crossroads in his life. The two are like oil and water, and I enjoyed every minute of their hilarious bickering. He’s downright mean at times, but I had a huge soft spot in my heart for him.

The mountains of North Carolina make a beautiful setting for the unfolding story.

SEP has created a bevy of interesting characters, and she takes her time in developing all the relationships. There isn’t a single character I didn’t enjoy. Cal’s protective mother Lynn and his stoic father Jim have their own absorbing side story. One of my favorite characters is Kevin, the young, cocky, and talented backup quarterback. I absolutely adored Cal’s spunky, quirky, and wise grandma Annie.

This book was written in 1997 so you’ll notice some outdated references like VCRs and VH1 music videos (Remember them?), but the story stands the test of time in every other regard. Some aspects are over the top in typical SEP fashion, but I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Nobody’s Baby But Mine is a simply delightful, entertaining, and hilarious romance. #winning

Reading Frenzy Book Blog

I put off reading this book for a while because one of the top reviews was kind of concerning but since it’s rated so well eventually I decided to just give it a go. Surely the review was just overreacting right? Wrong!

There were so many concerning things about this book. First, Jane tricks Cal into getting her pregnant by pretending to be a hooker just because she thinks he’s stupid. But her reason for thinking that isn’t even valid! It’s super stereotypical. She assumes because he’s a pro football player he must be a dumb jock and she also seems to be under the impression that anyone with a southern accent is stupid?? Excuse me??

Another concerning thing- Cal literally blackmails Jane into marrying and then treats her like shit all while plotting to get his revenge by destroying her career. He yells at her all the time and forces her to be a bitch to his family. Also he plans to divorce her as soon as the baby is born so idk why he even married her in the first place??

Another thing and this one bothered me a LOT. Jane realizes she’s in love with Cal after he hurts her feelings and they’re in the middle of a fight. Even though he’s always been a dick to her. It’s wild and makes 0 sense.

There’s also no satisfactory groveling. When Cal is an ass after Jane confesses her love and Jane finds out Cal was planning on ruining her life, even though he wasn’t planning on it anymore she moves out and all Cal does is get drunk. And when he finally gets his head out of his ass it takes no groveling for her to take him back. All he does is basically yell at her to come back and when that doesn’t work he essentially kidnaps her.

The only redeeming part of this book were the parts about Cal’s parents and also Kevin’s friendship with Jane and his admiration of Cal.
