A Skandar és az unikornistolvaj egy ifjúsági fantasy, mely talán a fiatalabb, 10-12 éves korosztályt tudja meghódítani. Sajnos elég sok olyan elem van benne, mely kísértetiesen emlékeztetett a Harry Potterre, továbbá a tapasztaltabb olvasók viszonylag sok problémába is belefuthatnak olvasás közben.

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief is an exciting middle grade fantasy adventure, filled with elemental magic, dangerous unicorns, and backstabbing betrayals. First off, I thought the worldbuilding in this book was really interesting. I loved the concept of the unicorn races and the idea that unicorns are born with a bond to a particular individual, and if that person doesn’t show up at the hatchery, the unicorn is born wild (and even more dangerous and unstable than your average unicorn). I’d love to see even more of how the unicorns and humans interact beyond the races (feels like there might be even more important jobs?)—it will be interesting to see if that will be expanded upon in future books. This book focuses on the mystery of why Skandar is specifically singled out at the exams (in a way I won’t spoil), his budding relationships with the other kids on the island, and the mysteries surrounding the villain, the Weaver. The book is full of action, so it will definitely keep middle grade readers interested, and there are some definite twists that I saw coming as an adult, but MG readers might not (and the book is still interesting and entertaining, even if you guess at the main twist). Highly recommended for fans of magical fantasies like dragon books!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice light easy read with lots of my favourite things. Magic, unicorns and cute little heroes. Harry Potter-esque vibes, what more could I ask for? The identification of the Weaver wasn’t exactly a huge surprise but I’m hoping that with the second book in the series now announced, the author will delve further into that. I loved Bobby and Mitchell’s characters, but felt like I’d like to see and hear more from Flo and see her character develop in the next book. The way the author describes the island, the accommodation, and the scenery, makes it very easy to picture it and imagine yourself there as the story unfolds. It’s definitely not a five star book and if I could give it 3.5 I would, the only reason it’s not a 4 star book I think, is because I wasn’t so gripped that I was desperate to read it. Took me awhile to get through it for the simple fact that I wasn’t so hooked that I couldn’t put it down.

I was not very interested in the premise of a "chosen one" story, but I can understand that it is a popular setting for youth literature. I thought the insights on mental health were interesting and well included.

However, I felt the book had some several issues. The main character is very bland and washed out.
Most of all, I felt that the author struggled with the tone of the book. This is surprisingly quite a bleak book! The familial and social context of Skandar is awful and the tone of the book struggles to find balance. Everything is gloomy and stressful, and no, a farting unicorn cannot restore balance. I did not feel any ounce of wonderment throughout the book.

The pace didn't work for me. Important parts of the book are resolved too quickly while we delve on some secondary issues for entire chapters.

Also, plot holes.

I really dragged myself to finish this.

2 1/2 stars. It kept me interested enough to keep reading, and I enjoyed the bloodthirsty unicorns
