i liked this book a LOT. the concept was brilliant and nothing i’ve ever heard of. this was a heartwarming story but also painfully real and something a lot of boys should read. i liked the ending, i liked how the story was laid out and mostly liked how the characters were done. this just didn’t have a 5 star feel for me unlike most of holly’s other books- which is probably just my personal preference, because this book was overall great

It seems so unfair that the people who deserve love like this the most, the ones who have gone through the most torture, are the ones who are the least likely to get it. How the legitimate need for it repels it, and increases the odds that you'll never get it. We reward simple people with love. People without trauma. And we punish those who dare to get scathed by life, even when it's not their fault, like their pain is a contaminant.

i've been so busy this past month with summer classes and work so i've barely found time to read, but i finally finished this the other day and it was so good. it reminded me of fleabag in a lot of ways, in the sense that it was so funny but it was also VERY heavy. honestly i'd say that it was heavier than fleabag, because there are major themes of sexual violence, trauma, and ptsd. but if you think that's something you can handle reading about, then i highly recommend it.

i saw a lot of people saying they were frustrated with the main character, april. i personally didn't feel like that because i found a lot of her insecurities to be quite relatable. also, her inner monologue was just so funny.

i guess the reason why this is 4 stars instead of 5 is because i really didn't like the whole catfishing element, but i understood why the author made that choice plot-wise. i also felt like the ending was kind of abrupt, but i was happy with the resolution, at least. all in all, i really recommend this book, but make sure you're in the right state of mind, because like i said, it can be a lot.

I went back-and-forth with my opinions on this book. I really enjoyed parts of it, but I really loathed other parts. The man-hating rants, at times, were a bit long & I feel could have done with some editing. On the other hand, the topic is one that did need to be covered & I appreciate the rawness of the delivery.

That being said, I found this book rather difficult to get into. This was, quite simply, not a book I would read again.

Ich bin wirklich ziemlich zwiegespalten, was die Bewertung dieses Buchs angeht.
Einerseits mochte ich viele Dinge total gerne, andererseits kann ich auch nicht abstreiten, dass es teilweise schon problematisch war, was da so abgeht.

Es geht um April, die in ihren 30ern ist und schon einiiiges an schlechten Erfahrungen mir Männern gemacht hat. Zudem arbeitet sie für eine Art Seelsorge/Kummerkasten, was ihre Sicht auf die männliche Spezies nicht gerade positiv beeinflusst.
Nach dem x-ten gescheiterten Date entschließt sich April also, dass es beim nächsten Mal anders werden soll und SIE die Kontrolle beim Daten behalten will. Um dies zu erreichen erfindet sie "die perfekte Frau" aka 'Gretel' und stürzt sich unter falschen Angaben ins Online-Dating-Leben, wo sie Joshua kennenlernt.

Und da fängt dann mein Problemchen mit der Geschichte an...dazu später

Aber zunächst einmal:
-ich mochte den Schreibstil und die Erzählperspektive richtig richtig gerne. Es wird aus Aprils Ich-Perspektive geschrieben und es fühlt sich an, als würde man eine Live-Übertragung aus Aprils Gedanken-Chaos bekommen, wie ausgekotzte Gedanken udn Gefühle in Schwarz-Weiß. Es ist sehr humorvoll, flüßig und lebendig udn daher super angenehm und erheiternd zu lesen.
- meine Notizen zu Beginn waren ungefähr: " zu beschreiben als eine Mischung aus delulu, naiv, wütend & frustriert, mit einer großen Prise Männerhass", fand ich wie gesagt, sehr erheiternd, in einem Wort ist die erste Hälfte des Buches einfach als zynisch zu beschreiben, manchmal war es mir zu viel Negativität...aber...
- man merkt aber nach einer Weile die Ernsthaftigkeit der Thematik, die zunächst erst leicht mitklingt und dann immer offensichtlicher wird. Es geht um

Vergewaltigung und abusivr relationships, was Aoril udn auch andere Frauen im Buch erleben

. Man spürt mehr und mehr den Schmerz und das Trauma, das April in sich trägt und zu verdrängen versucht und es wird zunehmend klarer, wie sehr die Protagonistin durch ihre Beziehungen zu Männern "vorgeschädigt" ist und wie sich das auswirkt (übertragbar auf so viele andere Frauen). Der Schmerz war oft so spürbar, dass es wehtat und die Gesellschaftskritik und Thematiken, die ich so überhauot nicht erwartet habe, haben dafür gesorgt, dass ich das Buch doch gerne weiterlesen wollte.
- besonders die Szenen im Boxstudio (ein Ort für traumatisierte Frauen, so safe-space mäßig) und die Freundschaft der Frauen dort war einfach so unfassbar wholesome zu lesen
- selbst mit der Gretel-Thematik konnte ich mich irgendwann insofern anfreunden als dass es schon Sinn gemacht hat, wieso April so handelt und die Kritik, die hinter "Gretel" steckt -> das perfekt-sein-wollen und nie-genug-sein-können, war sehr relatable

Aber das große ABER
- ich konnte einfach nicht so hinnehmen, dass durch die Perspektive all das pretending und "ich hasse alle männer und deshalb ist es okay, einen anderen Mneschen so komplett zu belügen und dafpr zu sorgen, dass er sich in mich verliebt, nur um mich dann selbst zu bemitleiden, dass er sich nicht in mich, sondern ja nur in die vorgetäuschte version verliebt" gerechtfertig wird. Auch die Zwischenkapitel, die so eine Art "how to get the guy" aus gretels sicht darstellen, haben mich irgendwann genervt.
- ich konnte einfach nicht hinnehmen, dass April scheinbar 33 sein soll :/ das konnte ich mir einfach so überhaupt nicht vorstellen
- das Ende ist schon echt ein bisschen zu schnell zu gut. Ich weiß ja nicht....hat mich irgendwie etwas zu unzufrieden zurückgelassen

bis auf dir Tatsache, dass April eine Therapie anfängt

Ach, es ist einfach schwierig. Einerseits ist es sehr relatable und nachvollziehbar und erheiternd und macht auch nachdenklich , andererseits ist es schon verwerflich und in der ersten Hälfte hab ich mich wirklich ständig gefragt, was das learning aus dem ganzen sein soll. Betrachtet man aber das große Ganze macht jedoch alles echt Sinn, es tut weh und der Schmerz-verdeckende Zynismus trifft einen sehr...wäre es ein bisschen weniger oder anderes pretending gewesen und etwss mehr nur verkorkst statt moralisch verwerflich, hätte ich es lieben können. So war es zwar gut, aber ich glaube, ich würde es vielleicht nicht unbedingt empfehlen

There’s a large focus on assault in this book, which I wish I had remembered before picking it up just to ensure I was in the right frame of mind. If you’re a victim of this (and if you’re a woman, you probably are), heads up! I love how the book tackles assault by a person you’re in a relationship with, and other dark and heavy matters not addressed, well, anywhere. You question yourself and belittle your rage because of society’s tendency to not only look at rape as a continuum rather than a line, but to fault the woman. Bourne addresses this head on, and while it’s challenging to read through the protagonist’s flashbacks, the whole plot is propelled forward with hope. I liked the revelations she came to alongside her support team of women who could relate to her experience (and those that couldn’t). The formula of the book followed her past publications, but that won’t stop me from reading the next one.

Not a feel good rom com but instead a very honest and validating expose on the woman experience. This was v hard to read at times due to triggering (but accurate) content - in fact I think some of the examples didn’t go far enough in terms of expectations women have to follow
