One helluva of a trilogy with an epic ending that does it justice. A central theme of philosophical rigidity is explored through multiple angles, with the hero not being a god but a man who finally understood that without standing up for principles in the real world, with all of the nuance that comes with it, there is only the destruction of all one holds dear. Having Ashur be the progenitor of some of the darkest magic to show up in the Half-Orcs books was stunning and disturbing and Karak's madness being borne helped set the stage for subsequent books. This is fantasy at its finest without the need for every detail to be fleshed out because the message is in the characters, not the world.
