An interesting read. The magic system has potential. It was almost confusing but somehow was revealed in a way that made it relatively simple to understand. There just wasn’t anything to really grab my attention and make me want to keep reading

(I won my copy from LibraryThing.)

This book was fast-paced, full of adventure and action-packed! It was also a great introduction to our two main characters, the heroes of this series. I get the feeling we haven't scratched the surface as far as Maegwin and Rovann are concerned. Both characters are so complex, I don't know what to make of them. Just when I thought I had them figured it out, BOOM! It was over.

Looking forward to the sequel.

It was a weird mix of different themes in fantasy. The way characters talked was over dramatic almost like reading a play. The story itself was interesting to me but I was getting pulled away too often thinking how strangely it was written. Feels like a middle schooler wrote it. Now that I think I of it… is this a middle grade book? That might explain it… I thought it was adult fantasy but maybe not.

This is a beautifully written fantasy novel, the characters are really well written and the story is one of loss, darkness, light and all the bits in between. You develop a love-hate relationship with the characters, but you still want to know what will happen next. It is a fast paced, but well written book.

A pleasant surprise, I actually enjoyed this book quite a bit more than I thought I would. The characters were robust and while the story may have had a hole here and there it was a nice relaxing read. I'm looking forward to reading the second book to the series and would certainly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing fantasy book with memorable characters.

The book is a good adventure story, well-written with interesting characters. However, it doesn't go any deeper than that and could use meaning and purpose. Additionally, the love-story tacked on at the end is completely unnecessary.

An action-packed adventure that defied more than a few of my expectations, with two compelling characters at the centre and plenty of powerful magic. A lot darker, grittier and more complex than I anticipated, once it gets going there's barely pause for breath, leaving you ready for book 2. Well written, with only a couple typos that I found and confident style, though it did fall for one of my favourite anachronisms - the use of the command "fire" for pre-gunpowder weapons. ;)
