The first time I read this was for a class so I wasn’t able to take my time with it. This novel needs it. Taking time to truly sit with Kindred is my biggest advice.

Butler has combined historical, sci-fi, and sharp reality with flowing, beautiful writing. You will read truly horrific occurrences marked with the most gorgeous, chilling descriptions. Her sentences come alive that you hear, see, smell, taste everything just as she does. Look at the terrifying truths about our nations history through rolling tears from Dana’s perspective.

Ending the semester with this book might have single-handedly destroyed my will to live, but boy was it a beautiful and poignant read.
