I never know just how to discuss memoirs on here. All I will say is that this was masterfully written and poignant.

Maya Angelou is great, but the best thing about this book is that the audiobook is read by her. I love when she's sharing stories that she learned from, and the coffee story and the rug story will definitely stick with me, but her preachy advice (e.g. all the stuff about patriotism) is not my thing and I often disagreed with her. It's a disjointed collection, and in particular her short essay on rape feels like her just taking the opportunity to throw a take out there without having done research or thought it through. Take what resonates and leave the rest!

The topics in this book vary enough that I think everyone can find something to resonate with. Dr. Angelou discusses her travels and cultural miscommunication, her abusive relationships, her many jobs. She covers her religious beliefs, significant friendships, racism, and the virtues she believes are important. Though I didn't agree with with all of her points, I did enjoy reading and learning more about her.

It felt like a hug to read, especially the poem about graduation (being in my final year). She is so inspiring and clever and a beautiful soul. She is everything I want to be and I will re-read this book forever.
