It took me a little more than four months to come back and finish this reading, one needs to be in the mood for a certain type of humor to go all the way. This book walks a thin line between plausible and satire, intending to be the former (I assume) but never sticks to one or the other completely. It's unclear if I just read a fanfic inside another fanfic (most likely).

My question at the end of the book had nothing to do with the story or the characters, I wonder If the author experienced fandom "culture" from the inside or if it's her perspective on what fandom "culture" is like.

Look, I rarely read contemporaries. Not even if they're slightly murder mystery. However, a book about a group of fangirls and things getting out of hand? That sounded kind of interesting! So, when I was browsing through the outlet of a certain Dutch online bookstore and saw this book I got myself a copy. As usual, the copy stayed and rotted on my shelf for quite some time, but yesterday I found it back and decided to start reading.

This book was every bit as entertaining as I had hoped it would be and somewhere there was some depth hidden in the book too. I've never been the kind of fangirl to really go to hotels or stand in line for hours for concerts. I've never really been a boyband kinda girl either. But, I did write fanfiction, just never RPF because that felt like crossing a line, and I do know how it can feel like a certain band or show saved your entire life.

I liked how this book had all the elements of the hardcore fandom down AND dared to question it. Not only because the girls in this story take it too far, but also because in a way it is kinda sad that we waste so many years of our lives following boys around who are not even that talented (often) and most likely not even that special people either. In a way this book works as a mirror, although I assume that those in the middle of it might not see it like that.

I also really enjoyed how unreliable the narrator of this book was. We are to assume that this was the true story, that this is what happened, but we can't know for sure. Not until some information in the last chapter is released. And in a way that means this story also displays the true power of fangirls. Not only are they capable of bringing buildings down, if they'd want to, but they'd also totally be able to get away with murder, especially OF their idol.

This was such a fun book!
You can't help but laugh at the crazy turns this story takes.
The narrator on this book is fantastic! She made the book for me.

This has to be one of the weirdest books I have ever read. 4 girls kidnap their least favourite member of their favourite band hoping to get something out of it but it all spirals so wildly out of control.

Honestly, I didn't know whether to find this book hilarious or ridiculous. I'm a big fan of One Direction and at times this felt really degrading, but I could see the black humour of it. But even though there was times I felt this was a bit sexist there was also times where it shows how important fans are for a band and how female fans can either make or break your career. It's been a couple of month's since I read this book (I have a ridiculous review backlog because I read too fast) and I still don't know how I feel about it.

Less than mediocre, just bad. Minus a star due to how unlikable the narrator is.
