A corrupt government manipulating it's people with a false narrative and generational exploitation of lower caste levels but with magical powers, enemies to lovers adjacent reconnection with a childhood acquaintance, a Peaky Blinders mob family and a strong-willed FMC. The MMC is a morally gray king and his brothers had such depth and compelling back stories that I couldn't help but root for each of them individually.

I thought this was a standalone, so my bad on that, and where it ends is gutting. 😠Engaging all the way through, an interesting if not super fleshed out magic system, lots of politics. This gave me Divine Rivals vibes, with a dash of Peaky Blinders. I found this more to my taste than the more fantastical romantasies - I like the grittiness, the feeling that these are people you would know, and that the magic was earth based. The relationships felt more grounded too, there was time for them to develop, and felt more believable. So a great mix of tension, yearning, angst, spying, maneuvering. Just hold on to your heart those last 50 pages!

10/10. Speechless. This book. This world. These characters! Man oh man. The ending of this book has me spiraling… I fear so much for Patrick and Nina! Gosh, I truly don’t know where to go from here. Patrick is MY TYPE OF MAN. The strong silent type who only have a soft spot for their loved ones. Ugh. Can I order 100 more of him please? Flawless. I know book one just released but I’m already dying for book 2.
