Feeling very conflicted because I really loved this, but the ending has some bizarre political implications and sours it, so like... not sure what to do about that so I'm leaving it unrated.

This was much better than "Down comes the night" but I still didnt really like it. It was trying to do to much, and did none of it well (expedition, murder mystery, political Intrigue). The main character didnt really change and grow either. All and all not my cup of tea.

Definitely not my favorite enemies to lovers story. Honestly you don’t root for anybody and don’t feel love for anybody.
Loralai is a good portrayal of an oppressed person trying to work within their oppressive system, but we don’t get to see any good outcomes, growth, or change from that. Her internal monologues made sense and were interesting… but don’t go anywhere. It’s just a fun character study.
This book came up in my library’s Pride recommendations and I was just curious to see how bad the “fascism” was and honestly… people are confusing the inherent issues under a “Monarchy” with “Fascism.”
I did like the audiobook narrator. She actually did a good job representing all characters.

4.25* - the scenery and descriptions of flora and fauna were enchanting and my favourite aspect of this book. Another highlight was the fairytales interspersed throughout the book, which were creative and beautifully told; the writing style was just perfect for the atmosphere of the story. I can absolutely see why people love Allison Saft's other books if they're as well written. It was just missing a little bit of plot - I wanted more twists and didn't love the resolution of the book. Also, I didn't feel particularly attached to any of the characters or the romance, until the very last scene:
"... and maybe someday, with time, the world will realize there was never anything wrong with someone like me loving someone like you."
"That is a fantasy," Lorelei whispered. "The loveliest fairy tale I have heard in all my life."
This scene was gorgeous and got me in my feels, happy pride month <3
Thank you to NetGalley and Daphne Press for providing a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.

Horrible character assassination(s) right at the ~75% mark. Incredibly frustrating after a promising start

DNF, apparently not intelligent enough for this one.
