I fear this book was just not for me. Nothing seemed fully flushed out idea wise and I felt like the characters were just soooo unlikable. I get putting your feelings and experiences on a character but the whole jewish martyrdom makes no sense in this context and it's really bothersome bc I just wanted it to make sense... but like in this political climate it gave me the ick

This book was very underwhelming in my opinion, and it definitely wasn't because of expectations because, in some way, it was what I expected: a book with amazing gothic fairytale/floklore vibes.
Starting with the parts that I didn't like at all, the politics in this book are terrible, that ending??? disappointing, if there was going to be war anyway why would you leave everything like that? I think this book could be a lot longer and close everything a lot better, because what the hell was that ending. Maybe I'm too optimistic but I didn't like it and was very angry because it seems like you're suppose to be fine with it and I felt like everything was so wrong. Another problem that I have with this book is that I finished it and I still don't understand the magic system, I don't know if it's because I'm dumb or what. It may be because of the confusing writing and the purple prose, I got lost all of the time because of that (maybe if I read it in spanish, my native language, I would've enjoy it a lot more, idk if I'm the problem in this one).
On the other hand, this book had many things that I loved, one being the sapphic yearning (of course), it was *chef kiss*. I'll always love a good rivals to lovers, polar opposites, slow burn, in which they both are obsessed with each other. I found very interesting and learn a lot about folktales, I marked a lot of them. The general vibes are really good too, as I said at the beginning of this review. I can't go wrong with a book with gothic vibes, I'm a sucker for it that's why I'm giving it the 3 stars.
Overall is not a real bad book, I enjoyed it, but at the end there were a lot of things that pissed me off a lot.
PS: if you like the main characters they remind me (mainly because of the looks) of Lenore and Annabel Lee from the Webtoon Nevermore, so I recommend you reading it, it's really good!
