Dnf at 37%. The most boring book ever. I canβt understand the lore, nothing happens just pages and pages of non things , i donβt see how the 2 characters that are supposed to fall in love would even be a match!

Honestly, this wasn't what I thought it was going to be - and not really in a good way either.

What a disappointment. The blurb really intrigued me, but the politics of this book are wild -- to search and find the greatest source of magic, only to live life happily (?) as a tool for a colonizing emperor? None of the characters were interesting enough to form strong opinions about. The world-building, flawed and derivative as it was, could have been interesting, but ultimately what the hell was this?
Spoilers in review!!!
I actually enjoyed this so SO much until, like, the last quarter of the book? The romance was my favourite aspect but the plot and ending left SO much to be desired that I am too devastated about it to enjoy the supposedly happy ending we got π
I think this could have definitely had a second book where they overthrow the king (Wilhelm) instead of just... whatever we got instead. You're telling me we have all this buildup of political tension and all the reasons why the king sucks and how each of their conquered nations are struggling and nothing happens? π not to mention how the main character's people are SUFFERING under his reign and there's no liberation or anything? I think there was so much potential especially with the relationships to the king - like yes, childhood friends but he's a tyrant and the rest of them (Sylvia, Heike, Ludwig) having to wrestle with those feelings whilst taking him down? It would have been SO delicious!
Like, genuinely I sped through this book because I was enjoying it so much, reading about how each of the characters feel in their positions under the king and their motivations and values and add a really enticing rivals to lovers sapphic romance and I was on the EDGE of my seat! But the way the mention of the whole ass civil war that happens at the end was basically two lines long is just π and it's basically described as like, Sylvia deus ex machina-ing it through using the Ursprung powers. I don't even know if I used that phrase right, that's just how I can describe it. I feel like nothing would have even had to have changed much in terms of the ending chapter even if they did overthrow Wilhelm. Sylvia goes back to Albe to restore balance and Lorelei stays back to help whoever took over after him and then we have the sweet ending scene where Sylvia comes back after four months and asks Lorelei to marry her.
Anyways, I personally really enjoyed the romance. The main character was really over the top and angsty about it (and so was the love interest, but we don't get her POV) but it was a great ride. The actual plot just left me wanting so much that I can't get over the missed potential (the Ursprung definitely wouldn't have chosen me since I've been found wanting π§ββοΈ). But to be honest, I have a lot of audacity for saying all this as someone who struggles to read high fantasy books anyway π
Overall, enjoyed it until the end, romance was great but plot left me wanting.
