Wanted to love this but it just kind of lost me halfway through. Inconsistent characters that changed for the plot and a very fizzled out ending that just... didn't make that much sense.

It wasn’t for me but I’ll be honest I’m not sure who it would be for. The romance was barely there then went 0-60 in about 10 pages. Reading this felt like being in the head of a ADHD academic. There would be two lines of dialogue broken up by 2 pages of tangential internal monologue, only to return to the dialogue as if the character was actually paying attention, but then the scene would end before the conversation finished. The story starts in what I would have considered the middle of the actual story, so your info dumped the exposition in the most disruptive way possible, halting any flow so the main character can tell a fairy tail. Even after all that I still don’t know how old these characters are supposed to be. They’re in school but some of them fought in multiple wars, all but the MC are royalty of different countries/territories, but are well known academics who grew up together?

Worst of all the main character is in my opinion the villain. She’s self serving, callous, and cowardly throughout. She’s supposed to be the leader of this expedition but I don’t think she does any leading in the entire book, except to support the weak leader of an imperialist regime responsible for countless wars every character is traumatized by, but she gets the girl I guess. I really did not get why this was the plot of a book with a gay fantasy Jew main character.
