I dived into this book expecting to love it, and i saw how many stars oomfs rated it, so i thought I'd love it. But unfortunately, i didn't.
Mostly, it was boring to me. It didn't make me wait to see what happens. Also, the plot twist was so obvious and i knew it from the beginning who killed Ziegler.
I didn't also feel connected to the chars. Like I didn't rlly care abt them. I didn't like Sylvia or Lorelei, but i didn't hate them too. I just didn't care abt them. Also, they were so racist toward Lorelei, and i don't like this trope.

the two stars are just for the plot and the expedition the characters went on. i fear i couldn’t stand lorelei the main character (i just don’t vibe with the cliche cold hearted cynic realizing they have feelings m and the constant self-deprecation), the romance was really lukewarm, and overall the politics and world building/magic were extremely underwhelming. the story is pretty stagnant until it picks up a little more than halfway into the book, and by the end of this novel, everything seems to revert back to status quo, and im simply not here for it.

Wonderfully atmospheric and moody, enjoyed the main two characters a lot. I liked the murder mystery elements but I'll admit I lost track after a bit on who was who, some of the names just didn't sink into my brain but more than anything that's on me. The beginning was a bit too tell not show but by the mid point the characters were surprisingly complex. Definitely upper tier YA.
