I picked this book up last year sometime because it looked good and I saw some hype about it. I didn’t get around to reading it until now but wow! What an intense and twisty story! The ending had my sitting there questioning life and desperately needing the second book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes dark fantasy!

- pretty fast paced, lots of action/conflict 
- didn’t require much thought or mind energy to read
- plot was interesting enough
- characters and romance was eh, didn’t feel super connected to them but reading it wasn’t torture

I’d definitely say it’s more plot focused. I admired that while there was this romantic attraction, they don’t actually explore it because of the book’s setting and I’m grateful for that - it made the conflict that much more real and not put to the side as an after thought. 

however, towards the end of the book, I found myself disliking the main character more and more. 1’st: the book hints that the rebel queen is actually her mom, and yet mc never shows emotion towards her? 2’nd: the only reason this girl was able to survive ANY of the trials was because of the love interest, and she has the gall to get upset at him and have future plans to backstab him??? Like, where did this come from? Why build up to all that if it was for nothing? Honestly, I’m going to pretend the ending never happened and that they got out and lived a free life while making sure the prison gets the punishment it deserves
