🎧 Listened via audiobook 🎧

This is the second book I’ve read by Beth O’Leary and  WOW WOW WOW!

What a clever clever story!! It’s funny because as I was listening to this, even though we were being pulled along the story in a certain way, I never quite hated Joseph. I always felt there was a kindness and sincerity about him (possibly due to the talented actors who read this audiobook) and with that niggling feeling, I couldn’t quite understand why such a seemingly nice guy would cheat on 3 women at the same time! Were we being duped along with these ladies or was there more to it? What was his reasoning? Was he trying to decide who to choose or was he just a complete arsehole? I just HAD to find out. The intrigue had me hooked!

WELL….just as you think it’s going to hit the fan, this story transforms and suddenly things make perfect sense! It’s so difficult not to give things away so if any friends see this review, PLEASE READ THIS SO WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT HAHA!

I really loved this book and it’s probably one of my favourite’s now.

A very slow burn for me, I really wasn't invested until all of a sudden I was hooked around 60% in.

In this book, we follow three women, Siobhan, Miranda, and Jane, as they are all stood up on Valentine’s day. We also learn that they are all stood up by the same man, Joseph Carter. We watch as they each forgive him the very next day and begin to catch deeper feelings. It’s clear to each of them that Joseph is hiding something, but it’s not enough for any of the women to get suspicious until it all comes crumbling down.

I love the way O’Leary writes books. The way she writes her characters and the word choice is just fabulous. Not to mention the back and forth between time, the detail, the subject matter she touches on in a ‘lighthearted’ romance… phenomenal!

I really enjoyed reading this book in particular, it had so many twists and while I caught on at times, I never truly understood what was happening (or what had happened, I guess you could say.) until the New Year’s chapters.

About halfway through I was noticing some timeline discrepancies, like Miranda recently finding out about Joesph’s mother’s dementia and how he had to move back home to take care of her, while Jane knew the entire time they were friends. Or Scott knowing Fiona without mention that they had ever met. Or Joesph’s mom knowing Siobhan even though at the time, all they did was sleep together once a month. At one point during Siobhan’s point of view I became completely convinced that Jane had been Blue Steel’s secretary, so I knew their points of view were at different times, but Miranda’s made that confusing because it felt like she was around for both of them, but I wasn’t sure how.

This book was really like a romance mystery, trying to figure out how he’s three-timing all these girls and then the twist ending explaining it all. It was overall a very fun read!
Siobhan’s death was sad of course, I was NOT expecting that at all.
