the artwork is incredible, the worldbuilding occasionally laughably silly but also just so fun, and this book has danced three pronged footprints onto my soul
Loved the illustrations and how detailed everything in the Dinotopia world was, down to the footprint written language.
I read this book when I was young and can still remember the wonder and excitement it filled me with through the immersive text and illustrations. As a parent, I am so excited to share this now with my child. It’s as beautiful as I remember it to be. I am convinced that it was this book that instilled a love for illustrated books that lasts to this day.

This is one of my dad's books that I have always loved. The illustrations are so incredible and the story so magical and beautiful that together they just take you to another world.

Great, semi-realistic pictures. But the story of 19th century father+son stranded in Dinousaur-land lacks utterly. No character-development, uninteresting story, no ambiguity, no real decisions. Just a bit exploration; tension due to danger is resolved immediately.

This book was unlike anything I've ever read before it is fictional but presented in as a historic artifact a journal from a father and son that find themselves shipwrecked on a strange island. This island is filled with dinosaurs AND humans who not only live peacefully together but they have worked together to create an unbelievably advanced civilization, at times I found it a little too unbelievable. I could accept riding dinosaurs and using them for manual labor....

but I find it hard to accept that dinosaurs can speak and create their own written language and take up cartography! Still the world that was created was lively and interesting and totally made me want to get shipwrecked there.
This book was very light on story and plot, it was basically all about world building with diagrams showing the mechanics of several Dinotopia inventions and providing the real scientific names for all of the dinosaurs.
Aside from the in depth world building the true hero of this book are the magnificent paintings and illustrations. They are realistic and colorful and absolutely gorgeous.

Overall this book is incredibly charming and perfect for a middle school-er obsessed with dinosaurs. I wanted to visit this world. The ending was abrupt but it only made me want to read the next book. A very fun read!

I read this book as a child and I remember spending hours studying the beautiful intricate paintings. Dinotopia is an 1890's adventure book where a scientist and his son wash up on an island filled with intelligent dinosaurs that live alongside humans. The story is written like a journal with entries from the father and son along with "scientific" notes on the flora, fauna, and inhabitants. I so thoroughly love this book and can't wait to add the others to my collection.
