I was obsessed with dinosaurs when I was a child and although I've had this book since then and have seen bits and pieces of the TV show based on it, I'd never actually read the book until now. What a gorgeous, magical, rich and utterly believable world Gurney has created. I want to live atop an oak in Tree Town, fly through the skies on a Skybax and explore the caves of the World Beneath (in the next book, hooray). The artwork is superb and intricately detailed and the storytelling assured and inspired. Beautiful.
Beautiful artwork and a great fantasy world! I think my only question was this: how did Professor Denison's notebook get off of Dinotopia? Really though, I want to know, preferably in the form of a sequel.

I certainly enjoyed this book. Its very easy to read in one sitting and has a very interesting concept. I liked the journal style and drawings within the story. All of the illustrations are beautiful and obviously took a lot of time and imagination to create such fantastical scenes. My only complaint is I felt disconnected from the characters. I wanted moe! The journal is a little shallow on description and seems to hurry along. Personally it would have been even better if a few more of the gaps were filled in. Even so, I really enjoyed this "tour" of the island and its inhabitants. It took me back to when I watched the television version when I was younger. Its a very interesting world and now I want to investigate if the TV series is on Netflix.
I also want to mention I won a copy of this book from Goodreads and Dover publishing. It never arrived in the mail so I sought it out at my local library. Just in case it ever arrives I want to mention this is an honest review filled with my personal thoughts and feelings about this neat book.

This is a beautifully illustrated fantasy adventure book told in the style of journal entries. It was one of my husband's favorite books from his childhood and we truly enjoyed reading it aloud together. It is a delightful exploration of an alternate world where dinosaurs live in a utopian society, and is told at a gentle pace - enjoyable bedtime reading for kids and grown-ups alike.
Having first seen the movie, and now read this book, even though I still love the movie, I like the books a bit more.
This book is awesome and a really quick read! I recommend people who saw the movie to read this to see where the inspiration for the movie came from. BTW, I started and finished the book yesterday!
