Alex Haley is an excellent writer, who I really believe captured everything that had to be said about Malcolm X.

Tragic and heartbreaking. There should be more autobiographies like this
Malcolm X was a stubborn man limited by his suffering and experiences. At many points in this book I was shocked by how vulnerable Malcolm was throughout his life and how warped his perception of reality had become by his experience of poverty, American racism and Elijah Muhammad.
There’s a belief that civil rights leaders and heroes are better than the rest of us - they are smarter, braver and visionary. But in this book Malcolm and his writer show his flaws.
Whether deliberately or not Malcolm shows his stubbornness and unexpected blind spots for critical self reflection. It shows how desperate he was for purpose, which led him to the Nation of Islam. It shows the impact his broken family had on the rest of his life. And his pride and how it led his actions as a minister and activist.
I am surprised Playboy sponsored this book - seems like they were committed to journalism back then.
I mourn the life Malcolm X could have had if he lived in another time or place or had he been able to die of natural causes at an old age. What perspectives might this sincere, inquisitive man have reached? What kind of person would he have been if he wasn’t so viciously afraid of intimacy?
His story is a life cut short at a key inflection point. But it’s clear from the book that he was full of so much love and compassion for his fellow human being. Though he had a bunch of crazy takes on women - but what do u expect from a 1960s man so overdue for therapy. He never had the chance to see a world outside the narrow path that was set for him by poverty, oppression and manipulation.
I’m inspired by this work to take more action in my community. There are probably so many other Malcolm X’s in the world - young, bright, curious kids that will have their opportunities snuffed out by systemic oppression.
We have to make the world better for them like he wanted to do for us.
There’s a paragraph in the book where he says that he fought as best he could for his fellow brothers and sisters in America and around the world.
It’s crazy he died almost on this day 60 years ago. Imagine what more he could have done for us had he lived 10 years more and had the chance for his OAAU to find its feet.
Imagine what we can do for the next generation if we start today.
